About Opiate Freedom Foundation

Opiate Freedom Foundation is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to making research and health information more accessible to the public. We translate published research, public-health guidance, evidence limitations, and lived experience into free educational resources that help individuals, families, and caregivers better understand opioid dependence, withdrawal, treatment, and recovery.

Our Mission

The Opiate Freedom Foundation exists to bridge the gap between clinical research and public understanding.

Our mission is to provide clear, evidence-informed educational resources that help people understand the physiological, psychological, social, and medical dimensions of opioid dependence, withdrawal, treatment, and recovery.

We believe people deserve access to understandable information before making important health decisions.

Why We Exist (Our Public Benefit)

Much of the information surrounding opioid dependence, withdrawal, treatment, and recovery is fragmented, highly technical, difficult to interpret, or presented without clear discussion of evidence limitations.

Opiate Freedom Foundation works to make that information more accessible by translating research into plain-language educational resources that are freely available to the public. We make published studies and health data easier to understand, including areas where evidence is limited, historical, emerging, or frequently misunderstood.

What We Do

Our public education work spans six core focus areas across the recovery ecosystem:

1. Public Education

Free educational resources explaining opioid dependence, withdrawal biology, treatment options, recovery considerations, and related health topics.

2. Research Translation

Plain-language explanations of published studies, historical research, and emerging findings, presented alongside clear discussion of evidence limitations.

3. Recovery Education

Information on sleep restoration, nutrition, exercise, mental health, social support, and long-term recovery considerations.

4. Treatment Education

Neutral, objective educational resources explaining medication options (including MOUD/MAT) and established healthcare approaches to opioid use disorder.

5. Family & Caregiver Support

Resources that help families understand dependence, withdrawal, overdose risk, communication, boundary setting, and support systems.

6. Evidence Literacy

Tools that help readers distinguish established clinical evidence from preliminary findings, historical research, mechanistic hypotheses, observational evidence, and personal experience.

Our Founder: Paul Mason

Founder, Opiate Freedom Foundation

Paul Mason founded Opiate Freedom Foundation after experiencing long-term opioid dependence firsthand. His experience shaped his commitment to making complex recovery information easier to understand.

That lived experience informs the organization’s perspective, but it is not presented as a substitute for clinical evidence. Our goal is to bring personal experience, published research, public-health guidance, and clearly stated uncertainty into the same conversation.

We believe people make better decisions when they can understand not only what is known, but also what remains uncertain.

What We Focus On

Our educational resources cover opioid dependence, withdrawal, treatment options, recovery, harm reduction, family support, and related research. We also examine historical and emerging research topics, including Vitamin C, which we present alongside evidence limitations, safety considerations, and established medical treatment options.

  • Biologically informed explanations of opioid dependence, neurobiology, and acute vs. post-acute withdrawal
  • Objective educational summaries of FDA-approved Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) and supportive clinical care
  • Historical and preliminary research topics (including Vitamin C literature) evaluated with rigorous evidence literacy
  • Nutrition, sleep restoration, exercise, mental health, and psychological resilience during recovery
  • Practical communication and support frameworks for families and caregivers

Who We Serve

Our resources are intended for people affected by opioid dependence and recovery, including individuals seeking reliable information, people experiencing or anticipating withdrawal, people considering treatment options, people in recovery, and families and caregivers supporting someone they love.

How to Use These Resources

These resources are designed to help readers understand complex information before making decisions. We encourage readers to consider the source of each claim, review the underlying evidence, and seek professional guidance when an issue involves individualized medical decisions. When evidence is preliminary, historical, conflicting, or incomplete, the resource should be read accordingly.

Some health topics discussed on this site involve important questions about timing, individual circumstances, potential risks, and interactions with medications. We encourage readers to consider that context carefully and discuss individualized decisions with qualified healthcare professionals.

What We Don't Do (Organizational Boundaries)

Opiate Freedom Foundation is an educational organization. We do not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medication, provide individualized medical treatment, or determine which treatment option is right for a particular person.

We do not guarantee outcomes or present educational information as individualized treatment recommendations.

We also do not present preliminary research, personal experiences, or historical studies as equivalent to established clinical evidence.

Our purpose is to improve access to understandable information so individuals and families can ask better questions and make more informed decisions with appropriate professional guidance.
